Oxytocin
Also known as Pitocin, Syntocinon
Oxytocin is the 'bonding' hormone — used in medicine for labor and breastfeeding, and (off-label, as a nasal spray) for mood and social connection.
Neuropeptide hormone used clinically for labor/lactation (injectable) and used intranasally (off-label) for bonding, mood and libido.
Mechanism of action
Oxytocin receptor agonist — peripherally drives uterine contraction and milk ejection, centrally modulates social/affiliative behavior.
Prescription hormone (injectable). Very short half-life (1–6 min). Intranasal bioavailability is low (~1%) and CNS exposure is debated. Often dosed in IU (1 IU ≈ 2 mcg).
